The original patent registered in 1922 describes the Otis King as: instruments comprising a pair of telescopic graduated drums 1, 2 and a surrounding cursor, a number of nested cursors are employed each being provided with a helical logarithmic scale and an index. The device is illustrated as graduated for determining the cubic content of timber from the linear scales on the members, allowances for shrinkage and trimming being interpolated by means of the scales on the cursors. The fiducial edges of the cursors may be graduated to allow percentage variations to be read or set. The first Provisional Specification describes a form of instrument wherein the cursor (or cursors) is fixed and the drums which may be replaceable by other drums are slidably mounted on a rod passing diametrically through and fixed to it. The second Provisional Specification states also that the cursors may bear additional fiducial marks displaced axially or circumferentially with respect to the primary mark.


Nominated Charity

Reiver Vintage is raising awareness of the work of Journey Enterprises, a small north east charity supporting adults with complex learning disability to lead active, inclusive and fulfilling lives. The Charity has four day centres which help people with learning disability learn life and work skills. These are in Blyth and Hexham (Northumberland), Bishop Auckland (County Durham) and Newcastle upon Tyne. The Day Centres host 160 adults weekly who are aged between 18 and 80 years.
