No 12, presumably in a series of timers being used in experiments.
The sliding steel shaft seen at either side of the unit starts the timer run. Sliding to the right sets the timing mechanism off.
Well-used condition consistent with age and function. Some work needed to remove rust from key and either a couple of fixing pins or glue to secure the brass fascia down fully.
A wonderful gift for a scientist, particularly one with a connection to the Cavendish/Cambridge.
William George Pye joined the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge in 1892 as an instrument maker having been trained by his father.
In 1896 he established his first scientific instruments business which became W G Pye & Co. The business began in the garden shed at 19 Humberstone Road, Cambridge. By 1913 the Company employer 40 employees and grew in to the scientific instruments business so well known throughout the 20th century.
