History of Armstrong and Brothers: jewellers and silversmith.

In 1825 Joseph Armstrong (d. 1851) sets up business at 261 Deansgate, Manchester as jeweller and silversmith, shop known locally as the old Deanery, was later renumbered as 88. In 1828 Joseph married Sarah Booth and had three sons: Thomas, George and Alfred. By 1851 Joseph brought his elder sons into the business. Thomas had already been managing the firm for some years. Thomas, who had presumably been apprenticed to an optician, expanded the business to include the manufacture of spectacles and optical instruments. In 1868 Thomas took his brother, George Booth, into partnership and changed the company's name to Thomas Armstrong & Brother.

Nominated Charity

Reiver Vintage is raising awareness of the work of Journey Enterprises, a small north east charity supporting adults with complex learning disability to lead active, inclusive and fulfilling lives. The Charity has four day centres which help people with learning disability learn life and work skills. These are in Blyth and Hexham (Northumberland), Bishop Auckland (County Durham) and Newcastle upon Tyne. The Day Centres host 160 adults weekly who are aged between 18 and 80 years.

This year the Charity is one of 15 organisations chosen nationally by the House of Lords as examples of 'best practice' (see https://www.theparliamentaryreview.co.uk/organisations/journey-enterprises)
